Matthew 25 Invitation

The Matthew 25 invitation is a bold vision of the Presbyterian Mission Agency that offers an invitation to all churches and councils throughout the PC(USA). Its goals have much in common with those of the Presbyterian Intercultural Network. It has three focuses.

  • Building congregation vitality by challenging people and congregations to deepen their faith and get actively and joyfully engaged with their community and the world.

  • Dismantling structural racism by advocating and acting to break down the systems, practices and thinking that underlie discrimination, bias, prejudice and oppression of people of color.

  • Eradicating systemic poverty by working to change laws, policies, plans and structures in our society that perpetuate economic exploitation of people who are poor.

The second goal is particularly dear to the heart of PIN, but systemic poverty is one of the symptoms of the structural racism PIN seeks to address, and we firmly believe that an intercultural congregation will be a more vital one. Many of the resources offered by the Matthew 25 invitation will be helpful to any church, group, or individual seeking to become more deeply intercultural and its explanation of structural racism clearly lays out that complex subject.

Even the logo for the Matthew 25 vision represents values that it shares with PIN.

"The circular shape represents unity and equality. Like God, a circle has no beginning and no end, and it symbolizes our continuing effort to help one another. The shape also suggests a globe that points to our engagement with the world.

"The three interlocking figures represent the equality of all people without gender or race bias. They have their arms around each other, symbolizing friendship, protection and service. The number three suggests the three focus areas of congregational vitality, structural racism and systemic poverty, as well as the Trinity.
"The color palette is bright, lively, friendly and energetic — suggestive of our active commitment.
"Finally, the legend “Matthew 25” below the symbol is the literal identification of the mark. We use a handwritten font to make the point that active engagement in the world requires human effort."
